The museum on Roosevelt Island in New York City highlights art from underrepresented groups. The program is split across four buildings with curved exterior walls that grow in height from west to east. The form of the building reflects the history of Roosevelt Island as a quarry and the Queensboro Bridge that is an iconic landmark of the island. The heights of the building reflects the context across the river with the towering buildings of Manhattan and the relatively lower context of Queens. A multi-colored frosted glass exterior serves dual purposes. It creates a unique facade element that illuminates at night to make the entire building softly glow. Additionally, the frosted glass allows a diffused natural light to enter the gallery spaces without damaging artwork or disrupting the visual comfort necessary for a pleasant viewing experience.
